Knit Your First Pair of Socks

Ready to take your knitting skills to the next level? In this 4-session class, you'll learn how to knit a classic pair of socks from the top down. We'll work through each step together—from the cuff and heel to shaping the toe and finishing with the Kitchener stitch. Taught by Susan Lee. 

Class Format: 4 sessions • 2 hours each

Advanced Beginner

Students should already know how to:

  • Cast on

  • Knit

  • Purl

What You'll Learn

  • Knit socks using double-pointed needles (DPNs) or a 9"–10" circular needle

  • Measure feet for proper sock sizing and fit

  • Work a loose cast-on

  • Knit a ribbed cuff

  • Work the leg and foot in stockinette stitch

  • Create a traditional heel flap and gusset

  • Increase and decrease stitches

  • Shape a rounded toe

  • Finish your socks using the Kitchener stitch

Choose Your Pattern

Please choose and purchase one of the following patterns before class:

Materials Needed

Yarn

  • Fingering-weight sock yarn with nylon

  • Approximately 400–450 yards for one pair

  • If using a contrast color: approximately 70 additional yards

Needles

  • 2.25 mm (US 1) or size needed to obtain gauge

  • For All My Dots In A Row Socks: 2.25 mm (US 1) and 2.75 mm (US 2)

  • Choose DPNs OR a 9"–10" circular needle plus DPNs

Notions

  • Removable stitch markers

  • Removable progress markers

  • Row counter

  • Tape measure

  • Ruler

  • Tapestry needle

  • Scissors

  • Small stitch stoppers

  • Sock ruler

By the end of the series, you'll understand the complete construction of a top-down sock and have the skills to confidently knit more pairs on your own!
