Sew Your Own Custom Cape |Thursday, Sept 10th & 17th | 4:30 PM-7:30 PM

Create a beautiful custom cape just in time for fall! Using Simplicity S8771, you'll create your own version by choosing your fabric, length, hood style, and finishing details.

This two-part class will guide you through fitting, cutting, construction, hood assembly, hemming, and professional finishing techniques.

Taught by Danielle Priest. 

With a passion for education and building community, Danielle has shared her expertise through classes and workshops on everything from beginner sewing to operating speciality machines, textile selection and care, pattern drafting, and fabric embellishment techniques at conventions and sewing shops across multiple states. Although she adores vintage fashion, it her love of costumes and the challenge of creation that brought her to the sewing world. Danielle’s meticulously crafted costumes have competed and won awards across the country and her carefully recreated Star Wars costumes can often be seen at local community and charity events with the Lucasfilm affiliated costume guilds. Pattern

Simplicity S8771 – Unisex Capes

Please purchase your pattern before class.

Session One

• Review the pattern and select your cape style

• Take measurements and determine length

• Prepare and cut your fabric

• Begin cape construction

• Sew the main seams

• Learn techniques specific to your chosen fabric

The cape will hang between classes, allowing the fabric to settle before the final hem is completed.

Session Two

• Construct and attach the hood

• Add your chosen closure and finishing details

• Level and finish the hem

• Complete your custom cape

Recommended Fabrics

For best results, we recommend fabrics approximately 60" wide, such as:

• Boiled wool, wool Melton or wool blends – warm, structured and classic

• Gabardine or twill suiting – lighter with beautiful drape

• Velvet or stretch fabrics – soft, luxurious and dramatic

Yardage will depend on your selected pattern view, size, fabric width and desired length. Please refer to the pattern envelope for exact yardage requirements.

Supplies

• Simplicity S8771 pattern

• Fabric according to pattern requirements

• Coordinating thread

• Appropriate sewing machine needles for your fabric

• Fabric scissors

• Pins or clips

• Measuring tape

• Fabric marking tools

• Appropriate presser foot for your chosen fabric

• Stabilizer and/or coordinating single-fold bias tape as needed

• Desired closure or clasp
