A hexagon kaleidoscope quilt made by stacking 6–7 identical panels or fabric repeats, cutting them into equilateral triangles, and creating 6-sided kaleidoscopes. Then, it becomes a matter of color-play and design, ultimately creating a beautiful and unique quilt.
Session 1:
-Align your fabric and cut into strips for cutting the equilateral triangles on die cutter
- Learn to sew the triangles into half-hexies
Homework: Between Session 1 and 2 complete making your
half-hexies
Session 2: Design your quilt top and sew together your hexagons
in columns
Choose fabric with large, bold prints. If
using a panel, you will need a total of 7
panels. If using yardage, you will need a
total of six repeats of the fabric’s design
element. Generally, this is about 4 yards.
Part 1:
We will be using an AccuCutter die cutter
for cutting the triangles
Cutting mat
24” ruler
Rotary cutter with fresh blade, able
to cut through 6 layers of fabric
Flat-head pins
At least 50 cheap paper plates, for
organizing and laying out the half-
hexies
Homework:
During part 1, I will provide you with the
pattern and show you how to arrange and
sew your half-hexies. You will need to
complete your half-hexies prior to the
workshop day. I generally recommend
about 2 weeks to get the half-hexies
sewn.
Part 2:
- Design wall, felt, or flannel sheet (recommend 72”x72”
-Pins
-Numbered pins or masking tape with a pen to number your columns
-Sewing machine with ¼” foot
-Cotton thread
-Iron and ironing board (provided by Tutti fabrics)
